Fusion surgery aims to heal what were previously two bones, into one bone.
This is often used to treat conditions of instability where there is an unstable joint causing damage to the nerves with movement or severe pain. This is also used to treat spinal deformity where the spine must be realigned after very particular cuts are made, called osteotomies.
Fusion can also be used in the treatment of nerve compression which requires removal of extensive amounts of bone or disc.
Fusion can often be microscopic or endoscopic, and can be done in an outpatient setting. Larger, more reconstructive procedures may require inpatient stay.
